Interview Hints
Once you have secured an interview you need to be sure that you think about
the best way to impress the interviewer and ensure that you stand out from the
other candidates in a positive light. Interview technique is important and is worth practising.
Preparation is vital. Be sure to look at the company's website and research as much as you can about their environment and business.
- Do not be late. Candidates who are late for any reason, even by 5 minutes, jeopardise their chances. Make sure you know the exact location and time of interview and allow plenty of time to get there.
- Know your interviewer. It is important to know the name and title of the interviewer as well as their role in the hiring process. Make sure you can pronounce their name correctly!
- Be ready to talk. You must be well prepared to discuss your current and past roles and this will include details about the company, the division you worked in and your role. Forgetting key details of previous employers does not give a good impression.
- Have questions prepared. Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions for them and it is essential that you do. Ask about things such as details of the role, the company, the team and the medium to long term opportunities.
- Wear a suit. Unless you are specifically told not to, dress smartly and avoid casual clothes even if you know it's their company policy. Almost all interviewers will respond better to a candidate who has made an effort.
- Be professional and articulate. Do not answer questions with a simple 'yes' or 'no', lie or make derogatory remarks about your present or former employers. Do not talk for too long!
- Don't focus on money. Don't enquire about salary, holidays or bonuses in a first interview or focus solely on remuneration. Know your market value if asked and try to avoid pricing yourself out of contention
